Ms. VanHouten was charged with felony injury to a child and faced a potential maximum possible penalty of ten (10) years in prison, a $50,000 fine, or both.

Prior to her preliminary hearing, Ms. VanHouten reached an agreement with the State to plead guilty to misdemeanor injury to a child. She was 2 years' supervised probation, with the opportunity to request unsupervised probation after a year, was required to attend a parenting class, was required to perform community service, and received a "withheld judgment." After her successful completion of her term of probation, and upon a motion, her case will be dismissed.
